Is there any real market for selling old sound and video cards on E-bay or elsewhere?

I have taken apart a dell computer which cacked and will destroy the hard drive but was wondering if I should try to sell the old sound and video cards instead of taking them to the dump too. If I try to sell them what kind of coin can I expect to get?

Is there any real market for selling old sound and video cards on E-bay or elsewhere?
Yes there is, but it will take patience. To me, it would be a hassle your profit from this would be minimal (I purchased an old video card off ebay for 9 bucks) ..shipping...setting up the page, etc...too much hassle for 10 bucks IMO. If you can still install ur old video card, in addition to your new one (agp/pci/pci-e) then I would do that and have multiple monitors (2+)

Thats always fun, and kinda feels Minority Report-ish ;-)

What is the difference between these 2 sound cards?

Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi XtremeGamer Fatal1ty Pro

and

Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi XtremeGamer

I had a quick look and couldnt see anything significant in the specifications.

What is the difference between these 2 sound cards?
The difference between the two is sound quality. The Creative Sound Blaster X-FI XtremeGamer (2nd link) has Multi Channel imput, and crystalized technology. This means that you will get no muffle, hear sound exactly how it is outputed. The first link doesn't specify the features that the 2nd link has. If I were you i would get the second one. But it's your preference actually

If i install two sound cards will i have any problems?

i currently have an on board sound card but still would like to install another one.. . via PCI i guess. will they still work. or will i have problems?

If i install two sound cards will i have any problems?
Yes you can have onboard sound and another sound card without conflicts. I know because I have my computer set like that. You just need to go to Sounds in control panel and pick which one you want to use. I have a TV tuner

card that requires a cord that will only fit on my onboard sound. My sound card did not have a plug for the cord. So I run the TV tuner off of the motherboard sound and the rest off the sound card. Also you could pick something like using your motherboard for the microphone and the sound card for the outpout.
Reply:yes, disable onboard sound or you will have conflicts in DMA, IRQ and other system settings
Reply:in each program ... you have to pick which one you're using. I'm talking about audio programs though, like fruity loops or something, not just standard things.
Reply:You're going to need to disable one in the bios.
Reply:You will not get any problem by installing two sound card, what you have to do is to follow procedure for installing your new sound card. after installation you will have to choose which sound card to use at controll panel-%26gt; sound and audio device-%26gt;audio

Are all sound cards compatible with all motherboards?

I was thinking about upgrading the sound card on my computer but im about building a new computer with a friend in like a year. So my plan right now is to get parts that are compatible with both computers and when im readying to change my MOBO it would be compatible. so right now im looking at sound cards and i was wondering if i buy a sound blaster now and hook it up to my asus, it would also be compatible with a newer MOBO imma get in the future with dual core and stuff.

Are all sound cards compatible with all motherboards?
All current sound cards are PCI, and all current motherboards have PCI. Sound cards should be switching to PCI Express, but that is in the future, and who knows when it will finally happen, so you shouldn't worry, motherboards will have PCI slots for a while. Also, don't mess with onboard sound, it is nowhere near as good as a sound card. I just bought a fancy new ASUS board with 7.1 sound blah blah, I had to buy a sound card, the sound was just terrible.
Reply:yes it should be ...theyre all pci and i doubt the pci slot is going away anytime soon .. however many new motherboards come with some pretty impressive onboard sound these days .. u might not even want it ... 8 channel and digital ins and outs are pretty common now ..
Reply:Not really but that shouldn't be to much of a problem.

When it time to buy the new motherboard just choose one that is compatible.

In reality most motherboards and most video cards are compatible but there are exceptions...........not too hard to work around.

Is there a way to configure a modern PC to play game sound from old games set up for old Sound Blaster cards?

I am a HUGE fan of old adventure games (think Westwood's Legends of Kyrandia series, Legend Entertainment games, Kings Quest, ect) and while I have been able to load and run them on my current PC (PIII 1.2GhZ, Win2000 Pro Dell with factory sound card) I really miss the music and sounds to these games. Is there a way to maybe install an emulator or a seconday sound card to run the sounds for these older games? or should I just go find me a still working Win 3.1 box with the old Sound Blaster card?

Is there a way to configure a modern PC to play game sound from old games set up for old Sound Blaster cards?
The problem is the soundcard in your case is onboard. Most of these onboard thingies are a mess and they are not downward compatible.

Look for CREATIVE soundblaster cards. I believe they are downward compatible with old programs and games. Im sure they will get listed in your games as Audio devices.

Can you change sound cards from one computer to another.?

I need to change my sound card. i want to know if i can take one sound card out of a old hardrive, and put it in the one i am using now. if i can how will i install the new drivers.

Can you change sound cards from one computer to another.?
as long as the card is compatible with the other motherboard. drivers should install from operating system or if not goto manuf. website, or maybe you have the disk
Reply:Note:

1) hard drive is the device used to store all of the computers data on, the system is what you mean

yes you can so long as your motherboard can handle it. seeing as how it sounds like you already have the card try it and if it dont fit or work, then your answer is no. if it does work then google the sound card model with the words driver download after it to find the drivers, or go direct to the manufacturers site. they should have an archive of all their drivers
Reply:yes you can take a soundcard from one computer and install it in another one. as far as the driver goes if you no longer have the disk it came with you can usually download the drivers from the manufactures web site if they dont have it then try driverguide.com

Is it possible to use 2 sound cards in one pc?

Im building an audio server and want to run the audio from the computer to 2 different areas in the house.

Is it possible to use 2 sound cards in one pc?
I think for what you are trying to do, it wont work. In Windows, you can have 2 different sound card installed, but you will only be able to use one or the other at a time and not both.

You're trying to get whole house audio of sorts and probably use the MP3 files from your computer. I would use some sort of hardware appliance to achieve that.

Check out www.sonos.com They have a solution you might be interested in.
Reply:Yes, it is definitely possible to have 2 or more sound cards in one PC, however not all players offer selection of sound output.

I haven't seen this option in iTunes, but Windows Media Player, Winamp and MediaMonkey definitely have it.

To play into two or more cards at the same time, you'll need to start multiple instances of the player sofware (possible with at least Winamp), or use different players (i.e. Winamp and WMP).
Reply:Yes, it is possible, my pc has a built-in and the inserted sound card, but i had to disable the other one because it conflicts with the built in.

How do i know what processor, video and sound cards are compatible?

I want to upgrade my pc and i want a new faster processor, and better graphics card etc... how do i know if they will work on my pc?

How do i know what processor, video and sound cards are compatible?
If you have a Dell or HP or other manufactured PC, you can usually find the specs of your machine on their website. This will give you the socket type for the processor (like Socket A, LGA 775, X2) and the memory type required (like PC3200) and how many PCI/PCI express/AGP slots you have available for a graphics card. If you have an AGP slot, you use it for graphics. If you have a PCI express slot, you use this slot for graphics.

If you cannot find the specs for your computer online, you will have to open your case and look at your components for part numbers, model numbers, manufacturer name and search the internet for information. If your components are really old, it may be cheaper to just buy a new motherboard, processor, and memory and keep all the rest of your components.
Reply:upgrading your p.c is allways a time when you need to research the internet so as to buy the correct components

i normally run a p.c diagnostic as to see what configuration my p.c is,for example processor socket type, memory type/speed,graphic card interface/voltage,and amount of spare pci slots for your new soundcard

a brilliant program for running p.c diagnostics is sisoft sandra lite from http://www.sisoftware.net/index.html?dir...

this will give you all the info you need to know what to buy when upgrading, including all of the above and much more

each component in the program is split into "modules",which include cpu,motherboard,memory,graphics,sound,pl... theres also modules woth info on software including windows and programs currently running on your p.c

all reports can be printed off for your assistance when purchasing your new hardware

i hope this helps

good luck dave!
Reply:Get our motherboard details, (BIOS will show that when you are starting your machine on the top left of your screen) find details on-line about it, that will tell you what does it accept and what works on it and to what limit.

If it is a Brand name computer, you may have a harder time getting that, I would call their support line saying that you wish to upgrade your machine via them and what is the best options they can offer on the same motherboard.

Take that list and you have your answers.

How can I find out if Vista has the needed video card and sound cards? as well as processers?

I found out that Vista can run Oblivion, but I can't seem to find out if my computer has the right stuff for it?

How can I find out if Vista has the needed video card and sound cards? as well as processers?
The OS doesn't make the game playable. Oblivion will run in XP and Vista. Its your hardware that makes the difference (CPU, RAM, Video Card.) Check the system requirements for Oblivion and see what your hardware is. I also use this program to see if my computer can handle games before i buy them.

Reply:Go here It'll tell u everything. It's provided by microsoft
Reply:Matters what your system has not what Vista has - Vista is the operating system.

Go to games site and see what the requirements are then check My Computer to see that you have whats needed.
Reply:XP can run Oblivion without any problems, no need to switch to Vista for that.
Reply:vista is death. get a mac.

What is the benefit of getting a video card from nVidia or ATI? Which one is better? What about sound cards?

nvidia is better if ya ask me

if ya dont game ....dont worry about it
Reply:nvidia is beter thats what i have, sound cards are for sounds the other 2 are for the video or what you will see when you turn on the computer
Reply:The benefit of having a video card is that the card takes some of the strain from the CPU, so that you can run cooler, and better programs on your computer.

For which one, GET NVIDIA!! nVidia is more reliable, compatible, and better quality for money.

The same thing with sound cards, although its not as necessary, sound cards help speed up your performance when sound is involved with your tasks.

Are these two sounds cards different enough to affect sound recording?

I have previously started to computer record bands as an amateur hobby. I have switched from my old computer to a more updated computer.

Previously Computer: HP Pavilion a220n

SoundCard - Integrated AC97 Audio

1.Decent, nice clear sounds

2.Decent volume levels

3.No latency.

Current Comp: Dell Inspirion 8400

Soundcard - ADI 1980 AC97 Codex

1. Really mucky sound, almost as if the condenser mics are in another room

2. Low Volume

3. 525ms latency.

Same setup for both computers:

1.TonePort for input (USB device)

2.16 Channel Mixer Board

3.Ableton Live 5

My Questions: Are these two cards really that different to make a recording difference? Or is my problem most likely elsewhere? If the sound card is my problem, can anyone suggest a decent sound card that would improve my sound recording quality?

I found on some some sites that state cards do make a difference. Just cant see how old comp and new comp could make a difference since it appears the cards are the same.

Are these two sounds cards different enough to affect sound recording?
Get a sound blaster Wi-fi with on-board dsp. It will help alot.

Can I run two sound cards simultaneously?

I want to use both digital and analog outputs from my computer and my current soundcard only offered one or the other. I bought another analog card but they're not playing together nicely- I can only seem to get one working at a time by disabling the other one. Is there some kind of sharing conflict going on? And if so, can I get around it so that both cards are enabled at the same time?

Can I run two sound cards simultaneously?
After some research on the web, I believe this would be application specific. That means the software you are using is only designed to work with only 1 sound card. It makes sense, because what about recording? It would be impossible to record from 2 sources at the same time.

If you are some audiophile or sound researcher then, I am sure there is software out there that works with more than 1 sound card at the same time.

P.S. If both cards work, when you change them, then the IRQ is setup fine.
Reply:I concur. Theoretically, it would be possible and they could be assigned different IRQ numbers. However, I do not know of any application that requires, and therefore supports, two soundcards.
Reply:Its an IRQ conflict, you have to set both cards to use different IRQ's, should let you in CMOS..

How do i get my computer to recognise my sound and graphics cards again?

My computer was wiped clean, and most documents were kept. My computer won't play sound, or pc games like Sims, though. It says it coudn't find a compatible audio or Graphics (DirectX) card. The Windows XP recovery disc was used, but the cards just won't work. ?

How do i get my computer to recognise my sound and graphics cards again?
If it's the same graphics and sound cards that were in the computer when you bought it, you should have a driver CD.

If you can't find the CD, download Belarc Advisor and run it. This will give you a comprehensive breakdown of the hardware and software that makes up your computer.

You'll then need to go online to download the drivers for both your sound card and your video card. (Simply type the name of your sound card/video card into a search engine, followed by driver download. i.e., 'Nvidia driver download' (without the inverted commas)).

Best of luck.

If you have any problems, send me an email and I'll see if I can help from my end. (Click on my photograph/avatar and send email.)
Reply:You need to re-install the drivers so the PC recognises the components and knows how to communicate with them.
Reply:You are going to need to download the drivers (software that allows the system to recognise and use the hardware) for your graphics card and sound card. If it is a shop bought machine you can google the machine name and model number and download these from the manufacturers support site. If unsure mail me the machine model name etc and I'll send you a link to the files you need.
Reply:the prob there is sort you are using an old version of directx much better if you download the latest direct x 9.0c or 10 either it will work not only to sims but it will work to all kinds of games in present whether online or lan games.. you can download it at softpedia.com

Are new sound cards usually quieter than the original sound card integrated with the motherboard?

I want to know if anyone who puts a new sound card in notices an improvement with background noise.

Are new sound cards usually quieter than the original sound card integrated with the motherboard?
If you want to eliminate the background noise, you need to get a card that has imputs that are external... you can get a great one at the guitar center

http://www.guitarcenter.com

this store is the best for service, support and knowledge, so if there is a location near you, it's worth going in, rather than shopping on the web.
Reply:it is the same... some of the filter the noise more than others though... you will need a really expensive one in order to fillter noise completelly...

Also, have in mind that the speakers may receive interferences that causes noise... My speakers receive radio transmitions and I can hear them If I plug in my headphones... cool! isnt it? :D

Reply:Buy direct. I use an ATI Radeon 9200 that I got for $90 over a year ago. I'm sure you could get an even better one for less than that now.

I would visit ATI's official web site. Just google them, or better yet, use the Yahoo! Search Engine
Reply:This website is great and has low prices. In fact, the HP company suggested this to me. It was when I wanted a video card for The Sims 2 for a low price.

Is there a program that mixes audio channels from 2 different sound cards and merge them?

I want a program that mixes the 2 sound card's input into one and also pretends to be a different sound card. Anyone know where to get one? I'm using Windows XP and not a Linux distribution so the linux guides won't help me.

Is there a program that mixes audio channels from 2 different sound cards and merge them?
I don't know of a specific program, but any digital 4-track can do this, assuming that the sound cards have standard audio outputs.
Reply:Not sure if your question is clear enough. There are many multi-track softwares like Cakewalk, Cubase, Cool edit, Wavelab and many others.

But to my knowledge, not many of these software might support multi tracking from more than one sound card at the same time. To be honest, I have never tried this myself.

But from a simple logic, most of the soundcards connect to the software using drivers and to accomplish what you asked for, you might want to get both the sound cards working using the same driver. Say, something like a general ASIO driver.

Hope this helps in a way or the other.

Cheers

Can i install 2 sound cards in my desktop? and will they both work?

one will be a reg.sound card and the other will be connected to my t.v.to be used at dif.f times of course they will not be used at th same i just wanted to make that clear.

Can i install 2 sound cards in my desktop? and will they both work?
You can but both cards will play the same thing. You cant listen to a movie on the TV from one sound card and listen to music on the other sound card at the same time.

Also when you want to adjust volume for the other card you will click on the sound volume control on your taskbar and select properties and then select the sound card to be adjusted with the volume control if it is not set as the default.
Reply:I thought they will conflict with each others, but here is what I have , I have sound card built in on the motherboard and I installed sound card, I disabled the one on the motherboard, the mic did not work good on the new sound card I activated both sound cards the sound card for sound the one on the motherboard for mic and every thing is working fine, so try it if it did not work , it did not work.
Reply:yes but you ll have many problems - don t do it - I already tried it - and I took 1 card of
Reply:Ain't gonna work - you will have conflicts.
Reply:The biggest question you will have to address is the issue of conflicting DMA resources. Most sound cards made in the last few years have the DMA channel preselected. If the unused device is turned off in control panel when the other device is being used, I would say you would have a reasonable chance of making it work. Each sound card would have to be allocated its own optical drive if you intend to play CDs or DVDs. Personally, I think the issue would be better handled by selecting a sound card has TV out and has all the features you want, rather than trying to cobble two sound cards together. The system will be buggy at best and a real pain to make work consistently. I am assuming you are using Windows XP, you didn't say.
Reply:i dont think that will work properly

no, you are at the mercy of junk audio amps and crappy speakers. The fix is to upgrade the sound card and the speakers.

How to get two sound cards to have the same audio output, merge sound cards? WINXP?

I have two sound cards.

1) One being built onto the motherboard,

2) One being a PCI card.

* I want both cards to have the same audio output.

I can only seem to enable one at a time.. I dont want to use just one, i want to use both at the same time....

Mabe there is a software which can let me manage the audio output.

Thanks.

How to get two sound cards to have the same audio output, merge sound cards? WINXP?
Why do you want to use both?

The card based one is most likely more capable than the on board sound, and in any case, you cannot use both. You would need something to synchronise the waveforms of the output, otherwise you'd get distortion or even zero sound (if the waveform of the two cards is 90 degrees out).

I assume you're thinking of using them like two power-amps, one for the left channel and one for the right. That's not going to happen. Sound cards are a pre-amp, not an amp in it's own right. That's why you use powered speakers with a pc.

JBV^_^
Reply:You can't run two sound cards off one pc soon as you plug them in one of them will kick the other one off. what you need is a stereo splitter to plug into the sound card for what ever it is your trying to do.
