How to instruct a newbie to replace and install a new sound card on his own without messing up his pc?

Do I need to get a sound card that is compatible with my motherboard? I'm using Windows 2000 do I need to make any changes to the system? Do I need to install the driver for the card? Thanks.

How to instruct a newbie to replace and install a new sound card on his own without messing up his pc?
1. See if you have an empty PCI slot on the motherboard

2. If so, purchase a decent sound card

3. Unplug computer, remove side panel

4. Ground self to casing periodically

5. Remove set screw for the slot you are going to use from the computer case back side, save screw.

6. Firmly insert new sound card in PCI slot

7. Secure with screw

8. Connect Optical drive (cd, dvd) audio cables to card and drives

9. Replace side panel and power cord

10. restart machine and follow instruction for the 'new hardware found' message.....the disk should be with the card

Pretty easy, huh!
Reply:You won't need to make any changes but it's gonna be tough since most newer sound cards don't support 2000, only XP and above. All you should need to do is plug it into the appropriate slot, like PCI, and install the drivers. Any sound card should be compatible with your motherboard as long as the drivers support Windows 2000.
Reply:chances are if you buy a sound card it will fit right in no problem just un-do your case and slip that puppy in on an open port. youll see what i mean when you open it up. Most sound cards have CD's with the drivers so just run the cd and you should be on your way
