Any advantage of sound card over onboard audio?

Pretty much all motherboards come with onboard audio now. Is there any difference sound quality-wise that makes a separate sound card worth the money? Especially with the nicer boards that have 5.1 and SPDIF?

Any advantage of sound card over onboard audio?
its a bit like onboard graphics v plug in graphics cards , what do you want to do?

most on graphics are ok for basic but put in even a basic agp or pci and there is a difference.

the "add on" ones will have more dedicated memory etc so the processing is faster makes for good gaming, also it takes demand from the mother board so may speed up the pc a bit.

also more options on the high end cards dolby 5.1 etc so if you want really good top end sound to perhaps run through amps etc go for it

Reply:Separate audio cards are for audiophiles that think they can hear a difference. Maybe they can, but for the majority of us there is no need to spend money on a sound card.
Reply:the last two have never heard of sound blaster extrime hi fi

you can hear a difference and it will also take some strain of the cpu as its not rendering the audio.

as for onboard sound being good, yes its better but try a real card.

my sound sound blaster extrime hi fi and m-audio speakers.

trust games come to life. and music sound great.

Reply:My onboard soundcard has both 5.1 and SPDIF and is High definition. These days they are sounding alot better than they used to. I don't see the difference in sound quality, unless it's just some el cheapo crap mobo.
