I'm out of warranty with my Compaq laptop and my sound card is fried, can I still send it back to them so they fix it and how much roughly would it cost?
How much would it cost to get a sound card fixed?
Andrew D, is correct about buying a new PCMCIA-slot sound card for your laptop. This will be your best solution if you really do have a defective piece of hardware. It will probably be more than the $20 suggested by Yessman.
Since the sound card on you laptop is built into the motherboard, it would require replacing the motherboard entirely, which is very expensive - several hundred dollars if you get it done at Compaq's service center. It will be much cheaper to buy a PCMCIA sound card and put it in an available slot in the side of your laptop (that's what those blank plastic pieces that sometimes pop out are covering).
Reply:i don't have any idea of the price they charge for the repair but you could try buying a USB soundcard instead. they cost less than $10 for th basic model. you can try Creative's Audigy if you want something better. they have PCMCIA %26amp; USB sound cards. they may cost a bit more but i don't think they will reach $500. They sound great too.
Reply:if you go to a computer store you can probably get a new or used one for less than 20 $
Reply:it could be a software issue, reinstalling audio drivers may work

However if it is an hardware issue, you may have to replace the sound card.
Reply:take your laptop to bestbuy they will fix your sound card for you and even replace it for you
Reply:if you want repair advice, this isnt the place to ask. you should contact compaq...
but...
typically itll cost about 5x more to repair it than it would to buy a new one...
there are sound cards that plug in to pcmcia ports specifically for that reason.
Reply:I fix these kinds of things all the time, and I found that when you take it to get it fixed they rip you off BIG time. For the age of your laptop, I suggest to get a new sound card...for $5000 you can get a new laptop if not two nowadays.
