How do I find my computer's sound card?

No sound comes out of my pc when I switch my speakers on. Tried new speakers but Im now thinking that it might need me to buy a new sound card? Is it worth it? What am I looking for?

How do I find my computer's sound card?
.Is this the PC you're upgrading Kris? we need to know your operating system to advise you what to look for. But if you bought a new soundcard it would come with it's own drivers anyway.

if you have just upgraded your operating sys from 98 ..then chances are the soundcard is an old one anyway and maybe not recognised by windows...
Reply:It would all depend on if the card is attached to the motherboard or if the card is a seperate piece. If it is attached than it is NORMALLY on the backside of the motherboard near the pci/pci express/agp (depending on what you have) slots. It will have the name of the maker on it (like nvadia). If it is a seperate piece than you should be able to see it easily. It will placed into one of the slots and, also, have the makers name on it. If it is in the motherboard the only thing you can do is buy a new card and place it into the slots. If it is a seperate item than you can determine if it needs upgrading. You will still need to purchase and a new card and place it into the slot.
Reply:Go to control panel, Sounds and Audio Devices.

Go through each tab and make sure no 'Mute' check box is checked and insure the volume sliders are not at the bottom.

Good luck.

Oh...also...

On the Audio tab in the Default Device section. There may be more than one device listed. After you insure nothing is muted and volumes are raised, cycle through each device (typically 1 or 2) and save and then test sounds.
Reply:if you have a notebook, you're out of luck, unless you buy an external sound card.

If you have a desktop, you're looking in the back for a few headphone-sized jacks. If you open up the case and look alongside where those ports are, and there's an entire board there, that's a soundcard.

If you have integrated sound, you may not find a sound card at all. it's integrated with your motherboard.
Reply:I'm sure your sound card is fine. Go to control panel/ Hardware and sound/Manage audio devices. Make sure all the boxes are checked off and none are muted. That should do the trick.
Reply:Its not like that your sound card need setup again that all.Call services provider he/she can repair that in seconds.ok. and check virus, did you check all music setting is there no button mute.
Reply:The sound card may be connected to the motherboard or an adapter card. Follow your speaker wires. If they connect down by where the mouse, usb ports, and network port are, then the sound is likely on the motherboard. If it connects where the expansoun ports, then it is a seperate card. In either case, right click on the my computer icon and pick properties. Pick Hardware then divice manager. Look for your soundcard there. You can remove the device and restart the computer. In most cases, the drivers will reinstall when the computer is restarted. If not, you may need to re-install the driver manually. In the event the sound card is bad and it is intalled on the moterboard, you will need to go into the computer BIOS and disable the built in sound device and install an expansoun card from a computer store. don't pay much more than 10-15 bucks for one.

Good luck
Reply:It's very easy to replace the sound card.

Buy one at http://www.tigerdirect.com

Open up your computer and switch them out.

It takes like 5 minutes.
Reply:Go to Control Panel and hit the 'Sound and Audio Devices Properties' file. Go to the 'Audio' tab and find the 'Default Device' quote. That is your current sound card. You can change it.
