How do I reinstall my computer's sound card?

I have a dell laptop and it's on Windows XP. My sound has gone strange and the volume messes up sometimes and it doesn't mute. How can I reinstall my sound card?

How do I reinstall my computer's sound card?
certain applications including games can mess around with your sound settings,so the first thing you need to do is go to start%26gt;control panel%26gt;sound and multimedia%26gt;then check the volume slider, and all other options

however i think reinstalling your audio drivers in this case would be a good idea

if you still have your sound card drivers, first uninstall your old sound drivers, these may be aprt of the motherboard chipset drivers so be careful you dont uninstall anything else

most motherboard chipset driver when you uninstall them will give you a list of all the motherboard chipset drivers installed, just tick the one you wish to remove and then click next

once the computer has restarted then install the new driver, but aggain when installing the new audio driver it will come as part of a chipset driver.be careful not to reinstall any drivers a second time, just select audio to install

however if your using a dedicated seperate sound card such as a creative sounblaster then all the above wont affect you, just download the appropriate sound card drivers, remove the old drivers and install the new drivers

also check the speaker connections and plugs for damage ect

worse case scenario...the actual sound card may be damaged, the description you have given sounds like a hardware fault, the first symptoms of sound card failure is sound distortion, hissing speakers, basically a awfull audio playback

any probs let me know

good luck mate!
