How do I find out what sound card my pc has using Windows XP?

I went to control panel, clicked 'Sounds and Audio Devices' and it says my default device for sound playback is 'Conexant AMC Audio'. But then I googled that and it seems to be just an audio codec, not a sound card.

I am trying to update the drivers of my sound card. Any ideas?

How do I find out what sound card my pc has using Windows XP?
It is probably an AC97 audio driver.

Click start Run, and type DXDIAG. This program gives more information about your sound card on the SOUND tab.

Alternatively open the side of your PC and see what is printed on the sound chip (very small writing if it is part of the motherboard)

If you have sound then don't update the software!! If you don't try the PC manufacturers website and download the motherboard and sound drivers.
Reply:Right click on My Computer. Select: Properties; then select: Devices, and you should see your sound card listed. Click on it for more info.
Reply:just go to the website of your computer maker.

then enter in your model number

it will tell everything you want to know including updates and stuff.
Reply:go back into hardware pick divce manager and pick sound click on + which will list all diviec,s pick the one which you can ck properties my is called realtek ac97 audio left click it to bring up proerties then click drivers then update
Reply:'Conexant AMC Audio' it´s your sound card, but windows detect it as a codec. No problem with that.

I suggest that you download some hardware recognition software like Everest or Sandra and then get the exact model and look 4 the driver. Everest its the best one cause it has direct links to downlaod drivers
Reply:take start run type dxdiag you can know your configuration
Reply:if u sarch your computer's make and model on the company website, it will give you all of the computer's specifications ( motherboard, memory, video card, etc.)
Reply:Right click "My Computer"

Click "Manage"

Click "Device Manager"

Click "Sound Video and Game devices"

Your card should be under that list.
Reply:try using si-soft sandra-lite (avallible from download.com)to give you info on your sound card...once u have found it go to www.softpedia which i think has the best selection of drivers on the web and download them.....one tip when installing them ...burn them on to disc and leave the disc idle in the drive and use ..add hardware wizard...windows will then take the relevant files it needs and save you time and space on your drive...i found that out when installing a artec scanner which had a instalation disc of 340mb but windows only actually needed about 10mb of data saving me over 300mb of drive space

soundblaster audigy cards can be bought for around thirty pounds from dabs.com and that is what i use and they are very good for all round gaming and listening to music ...for another thirty quid you can get a 5.1 surround sound system from www.argos.co.uk

hope u sort it out
